MAY 24, 2019, MARQUETTE, MI – 906 Adventure Team was one of 14 organizations throughout the U.P. to win a $5,000 grant through Flagstar Bank’s “Flagstar Crafts Community” initiative. The award was presented Tuesday, May 21st at Flagstar’s Washington Street branch.
Winners were chosen by public vote—both online and in each Flagstar branch—and more than 14,000 votes in total were tallied. The initiative was created to support non-profits in communities where Flagstar operates in.
“It’s really awesome to see the nonprofits come through,” said Sean Geary, Flagstar Market Manager.
“We saw them posting on social media, rallying their supporters around them and then just our everyday customers that came in the branch were really excited about non-profits and charities they were familiar with.”
On hand to accept the grant were 906AT Director of Adventure Todd Poquette and 906AT Board Members Ryan Brang and Justin Carlson.
“It’s tough to think of this as a victory, but it is, and the credit belongs to our community, here in the U.P. and across the Midwest,” said Poquette.
“All of the non-profits nominated do great work and deserved to win, but only a few could walk away with the $5,000. I’m blown away today, and every day.
“I met someone for coffee the day after we were presented the check, and something this person told me has really stuck. She said, ‘Non-profits are not supposed to create charity, they are meant to create change… 906 Adventure Team is creating change.’”
Poquette continued: “I’ve spent a couple days thinking about that, and I’ve come to this conclusion: we’re fortunate that people like Flagstar, Enbridge, Community Foundations, and Rotarian groups focus on charitable giving which allows us to focus on creating change in the community… not just here in Marquette, but also in Delta and Gogebic County.”
906 Adventure Team relies on grants and donations like Flagstar’s to help get kids outside, changing their lives through adventure.
